The Board

With the publication of the General Decree of the Kingdom Financieel Toezicht BES in the 'Staatsblad' the Board of financial supervision (Cft) was established in November 2007. The president and the members of the Board have been appointed for a period up until January 1st, 2011. Through the General Decree of the Kingdom Financieel Toezicht NACM, which was published in 2008, financial supervision was established for the islands of Sint Maarten, Curacao, and the National government of the Netherlands Antilles. In 2008 two more members were appointed to the Board by the entities that were added to financial supervision

Hans Weitenberg is the president of the Board. In the Netherlands Antilles he is known as a member of the committee that prepared the transition to status aparte of Aruba in the 1980’s. Former state-secretary Margo Vliegenthart was nominated as a member of the Board by the Netherlands. Alberto ‘Chos’ Romero, director at the Bank Nederlandse Antillen, is nominated by the Netherlands Antilles as a member. Max Pandt, former gezaghebber of the Windward Islands, is nominated as a member by the BES-islands. Ivan de Windt has been nominated for the island of Curacao. And finally, Roland Tuitt has been nominated by the island of Sint Maarten.

The Cft publicizes the several functions of its members through an annual publication in 'de Staatscourant' and 'De Curaçaosche Courant'. An overview of these extracurricular activities can also be found on this website.

The Board is supported by a secretariat, which is located on Curacao.

The Secretariat

The secretary of the Cft is Geert Bergsma, former financial director of the Royal Netherlands Airforce. As of July 1st 2009 he has presided over the secretariat with its staff of advisors and supporting staff. The office of the secretariat is located at De Rouvilleweg 39, Willemstad, Curacao.

At this moment the staff of the Secretariat consists of fifteen persons. During 2009 the Secretariat was expanded with a number of advisors as the work scope of financial supervision was extended to Curacao, Sint Maarten and the Netherlands Antilles. The Cft strives for a balance within its staff of advisors with Antillean and Dutch backgrounds.

Staff of the Secretariat travels to the islands on a regular basis. Travel usually involves talks with governing entities, civil servants and other involved parties. The secretariat conscientiously does not conduct supervision from behind a desk.
